![]() Choir The S.S.S St. Elijah choir was formed in March 1964 in the newly established parish of St. Elijah, Gary, Indiana. The choir was inducted into the Serbian Singing Federation of America with the S.S.S. Gracanica choir of Windsor Ontario as kumovi. The choir was instructed and directed by Simeon Popovic who transcribed and donated the entire Liturgy in October of 1964. The first choir president was George Peyovich. His board consisted of 12 board members: Nick Stojsavljevic, Mara Tica, Mirko Sovljanski, Velinka Zorljenac, Sandra Johnson, Eli Tica, Steve Stevanovic, Donna Samardzija, Milica Kostur, Gordana Jocich, Gloria Jakovljevich and Evonne Pekovich. ![]() The Very Reverend Father George Lazich came to our parish in 1965 and assumed the duties of teacher and concert director. He was trained in music in Yugoslavia before entering Theology School. His music professor was a student of Stevan Mokranjac. The St. Elijah choir has traveled throughout the United States and Canada, singing in concerts and festivals. The choir has hosted a number of annual festivals with choirs coming from distant places to sing for the two-day festivals that were wonderful expressions of Serbian music. ![]() The Sunday directors through the years included: Gordana Jakovlevic, Eleanor Paunovich, Stamenka Ristic, Anka Karna and Dobrila Samardzich, who is our current choir director. Our choir is dedicated to our liturgical responses and humbly sings every Sunday from the first Amin to the last.
