 Serbian Sisters Circle St. Elijah Serbian Sisters Circle, or Kolo Sestara’s mission is to “aid and support all undertakings of the parish”. Thus, Kolo’s Krsna Slava, Descent of the Holy Spirit or Penetecost, a most appropriate Slava for the Sister’s, is enthusiastically exemplified through all their good deeds, which are continually guided by the Holy Spirit. This was Kolo’s commitment to the congregation when it was first established in 1964 and remains its mission almost 50 years later. The Kolo has worked tirelessly through the years to fund-raise money to equip the kitchen in our former church in Gary and the new Serbian-American Hall in Merrillville. In addition, the Kolo purchased three chandeliers in the Cathedral as well as purchased draperies and furnishings for the parish home throughout the years. Whenever the Kolo has been called upon to lend a hand, they never refuse and the members have always graciously volunteered their time to prepare, cook, bake and work many hours for all Church Slavas, hosting dignitaries, annual Serb fests, SNF tournaments, supporting the Choir and Folklore as well as produce a successful cookbook that is still in demand after two printings and over 20 years later. In more recent years, due to the sufferings of our Serbian people in our homeland, the Kolo has put forth a lot of love and energy to the humanitarian efforts of raising and donating thousands of dollars to children’s orphanages, sponsoring 13 children, collecting, packing and transporting much needed clothing and other necessities to the hard hit areas throughout Serbia. Because of their compassion and love as women, mothers and babas, they have succeeded in helping many of our people overseas as well as the families who have been relocated to our area. Presently, the kolo has embraced a new endeavor by committing monies to the completion of the Frescos in the dome of our beautiful Cathedral by their Krsna Slava in 2010. The names and faces may have changed through the years but the devotion of the Serbian Sisters Circle to the parish remains as strong today as it did in 1964. The members of today continue to make the Sisters of yesterday very proud as they continue to support the parish! |
